I fell in love with Crane's Orchards many years ago when I brought my son and his friends to the orchard. A gentleman with rough working hands introduced himself and asked us what kind of apples we like. I stammered a response, unfamiliar with the varieties grown locally. He pulled out a paring knife and began slicing up apples from the bushels in front of him. Once we found a favorite (Honey Crisp for the kids, Empire for me) we were on our way to apple heaven. This week, there are an astounding number of varieties ready for picking including MacIntosh, Golden Delicious, Jonathan, Red Delicious, Empire, Cortland, Ida Reds and Jonagolds. If you're staying with us in the bed and breakfast or in a guest cottage this fall, ask about our Caramel Apple Dip recipe. All you need are four easy ingredients and plenty of apples!
